Tunnelling

TunnellingCarnon Contracting’s engineers have retained the skills and expertise to undertake specialist underground work. Such work may include tunnel drilling; the drilling of small to medium sized tunnels, particularly in hard rock for road crossings.

Projects completed by Carnon Contracting have ranged from drilling a 2.8m x 2.3m tunnel 877 metres through a hillside in Somerset to carry water from the river Exe to the Wimbleball reservoir for a drought alleviation scheme, to drilling 10-20 metre long tunnels by hand through hard rock in close proximity to services where conventional trenching or blasting would not be permitted.

All such operations are carried out by fully qualified and experienced operatives with full confined space training.

Other projects completed by Carnon Contracting include:

  • The clearance of debris and refurbishment where required in the 520m long South West Water Yellow Sands outpour tunnel at Newquay, Cornwall using a custom-made tracked haulage scheme
  • The clearance and refurbishment of a 146m long connecting adit between Roskear shaft and the deep adit minewater drainage system in Camborne for the Environment Agency
  • Road crossing tunnels for Alfred McAlpine
  • Tunnel refurbishment at Bathstone quarries for Hanson Plc
  • The construction of a 35m long pipe outfall tunnel though varied geological ground at Coombe Martin and with two 10mm pipe service tunnels in Exmouth, all for Birse Construction as part of their contract with South West Water
  • The clearance and refurbishment where required of the 20m long Tottyford dam drainage tunnel for South West Water
